Press a shortcut, talk — transcription lands right where your cursor is. Runs 100% locally. Your voice never touches a server.
Praat transcribes your voice directly into any app — email, Slack, VS Code, anything. One shortcut, speak, done. Your keyboard can finally take a break.

Three steps, zero friction.
Choose Small for speed or Large for maximum accuracy. Praat downloads Whisper once and runs it entirely on your hardware — Metal on Mac, Vulkan on Windows.
Hold your global shortcut and speak naturally. Praat listens with Voice Activity Detection — it only captures when you're actually talking, not silences.
Release the shortcut and your transcription is pasted exactly where your cursor sits — in any app, any text field, any editor. Zero copy-paste needed.
Everything you'd want from a transcription tool — and nothing you wouldn't.
Transcription runs inside your machine. No API calls, no cloud processing, no usage logs. Not even the model creators can hear you — because it never connects.
Metal on Apple Silicon. Vulkan on Windows. Your GPU does the heavy lifting so transcription lands in seconds, not minutes.
MIT licensed. Read the code, fork it, improve it. No black boxes, no hidden behavior.
Email, Slack, Notion, VS Code, Terminal, browser — if it has a text cursor, Praat can type into it. No integrations required.
Free forever. No account. No catch.
Everything you might wonder about.
Yes. Praat is MIT-licensed open source. Download it, use it, share it with anyone. No subscription, no account, no paywall — ever.
No. Transcription happens locally on your device using Whisper models. Praat makes exactly one network call — to download the model file once on first launch. After that, it works completely offline.
macOS Gatekeeper blocks apps that aren't code-signed with a paid Apple Developer certificate. Right-click the app → Open → Open Anyway. You only need to do this once. Or run xattr -cr /Applications/Praat.app in Terminal.
Click "More info" → "Run anyway." This happens because Praat doesn't have a paid code-signing certificate. The app is open source — you can review every line at the GitHub link above.
Turbo is the best default for most people — fast and highly accurate. Use Small on older machines. Use Large if you want the absolute best quality and have a capable GPU.
Microphone access (to hear you) and, on macOS, Accessibility permission (to paste text into other apps). That's it — nothing else is requested.
